1. Name, Age and Residence
Zein E. Obagi, M.D. 70 years old, Beverly Hills, CA.
2. What is your schooling/background?
When I was younger, my older sister received second- and third-degree burns on her back after a pan of boiling water fell on her. I saw the frustration in the doctors’ faces in treating her and thought that maybe I could be of better help or I could contribute positively to medicine – that is when I made up my mind that I wanted to be a doctor. I entered Damascus Medical School right after high school and after I graduated I moved to Detroit to continue my medical education. I completed my dermatologist residency while serving as a medical doctor in the U.S. Navy and then spent three years as a dermatologist at the naval hospital in San Diego before I opened my first practice. I am a board certified diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.
3. How did you get started in the skincare business?
I realized that we didn’t have a proper approach to evaluate skin. With my newly opened practice, I spent two years being an aesthetic detective. My approach to skincare is that prevention, rejuvenation and treatment should begin at the cellular level, not on the surface, and that different skin types react differently to treatments. The results of my detective work was the Nu-Derm system that launched in 1985 which in turn launched my success and motivated me to keep learning and developing new treatments and products.
4. What sets Obagi Skin Health Institutes apart from other skincare lines/procedures?
Each patient requires an individual consultation and treatment plan. We start by creating a skin classification to help me adjust treatment based on skin type. Then I create a treatment that allows me to go to the cells. We specialize in Skin Health Restoration and every patient gets a unique and custom treatment plan.
5. You have created a skin care line - what is that like? Why did you create it?
ZO Skin Health™ and ZO Medical by Zein Obagi MD offer skin solutions that fight the signs of aging with innovative technology and highly effective ingredients. The skincare lines’ differentiating point is that it offers a higher concentration of retinol than what is commonly found in over-the-counter department store lines. This skincare line was my vision and I created it to change the concept of dermatology. The original line that I created "Obagi Nu derm" became the gold standard in physician dispensed skin care. My new line, ZO Skin Health and ZO Medical by Zein Obagi, MD™ is the most updated and complete creation and completes my ZO Circle of Skin Health™.
6. Why did you decide to open up an Obagi Skin Health Institute in Laguna Beach?
The beach, one of the prized benefits of living in Orange County, is also one of the most detrimental to healthy, youthful looking skin. By opening the clinic in Laguna Beach, we are hoping to restore the youthful skin in the community by treating patients without making their conditions worse.
7. What’s the most popular treatment at Obagi Skin Health Institute?
The Z02 Facial at the Obagi Skin Health Institute is one of our most popular treatments. The ZO2 Facial is the perfect treatment for all skin types. It exfoliates all the dead, dry and flaky skin of the surface of your skin with a “power peel” a microdermabrasion treatment. Oxygen is vital to the skin’s health, when we inhale oxygen very little oxygen is distributed to our skin. In this Oxygen (O2) therapy treatment we infuse oxygen to the skin through the pores as well as a customized serum that will bring back that rejuvenated glow and essential moisture to the dry and dull winter skin
8. What are the top things women are doing wrong in their skin care routine?
Depending on moisturizers without incorporating ingredients that activate and stimulate skin. Moisturizers are like desserts, they smell and feel good with very limited benefits. It should be the last thing to be used, as moisturizers can weaken the skin and cause dependency. The golden steps to skincare are to activate, stimulate, then moisturize, and protect with sunscreen.
9. If you could offer one piece of skincare advice - what would it be?
If you truly want to improve your skin, you need to restore the normal function of the cells. Lazy skin cells are like a bunch of lazy soldiers. You need to wake them up, shake them up, and get them to march.
10. How can we prevent aging after years of damage?
By keeping the cellular functions intact. This forces cells to maintain the production of collagen and elastin that usually stops at age 30.
11. Do you do surgical procedures at Obagi Skin Health Institute?
The Obagi Skin Health Institute is unique in our Total Approach philosophy. Along with providing skin health restoration, our surgeons orchestrate a comprehensive spectrum of plastic surgery services, to improve and enhance the appearance of the face and body.
12.What is the downtime after a treatment?
There is little to no downtime after a treatment.
13.How would you describe the “Obagi Womnan”?
Every woman is an “Obagi Woman”. Everybody wants to restore their skin and have a youthful appearance. It is the women that take advantage of what we are offering that truly become an “Obagi Woman” – and they of course have healthy, beautiful skin.
14. How fast are the results if I go to Obagi Skin Health Institute?
Results vary from patient to patient. Depending on the severity of your skin problems will depend on how fast you see results. Some patients see results after just one treatment!
15. Any notable celebrities who love Obagi Skin Health Institute?
Lots! But their privacy is very important to us, so we are unable to disclose. We also see many political figures from queens, to princesses to prime ministers. Best of all, I have treated more dermatologists and plastic surgeons from all over the world than anyone else.
16. We read you work with your wife, how did you two meet?
We first met in 1980 when I visited her in her home with my friends (her sister and brother in law), I immediately fell in love but ignored my heart as I was married and so was she. 10 years later, she came to my clinic for a consultation and listened to my seminar, she was divorced and I was a widow then, so I immediately proposed, three weeks later - we got married and the rest is history!
17. Who are some of your associates at Obagi Skin Health Institute?
Dr. Monika Kiripolsky and Dr. Aaron Kosins are my amazing associates at the Obagi Skin Health Institute. Dr. Kiripolsky is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained cosmetic surgery and laser surgeon. She’s dedicated to treating all dermatologic conditions including skin cancer screening, acne, rosacea, eczema, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and other chronic skin diseases. Dr. Kosins prides himself with being on the cutting edge of plastic surgery techniques and principles. With a special interest in surgical rejuvenation, as well as skin health and nutrition, his goal is to treat the whole person. Dr. Kosins is also publishing two articles about the ZO skin health and Dr. Obagi's skin health rejuvenation in the plastic surgery Journals.
18. Why do guests love attending your seminars? What happens there?

They get to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and champagne throughout the evening while I share my proven successful approach to creating younger-looking, radiant skin for women and men of all ages.
